Few Warning Signs Roof Needs To Be Replaced or Repaired

Spring has arrived in full swing and that means that the snow is melting and the rain is coming. While you’ve probably already cleared out from the winter debris, there are some basic roof maintenance plans you need to keep in mind when it comes to the spring weather.

With all this rain that comes with this time of year, your home in the New England and South Shore area should be inspected as soon as possible. Your roof may be in need of repair or replacing due to age, damage from the winter storms, or some other problem that may have developed without you realizing it.

While you may think that the only way to tell if something is going on with your roof is if it decides to fall in, there are other ways you can tell if you need to have someone come out and look at it. There are several warning signs that you should be aware of when it comes to knowing if you should call out a roof repair or replacement technician. Keeping an eye on your roof on a regular basis will help you to catch problems when they are still minor. Take a look below at the signs that point to needing a technician out and see if your roof is showing signs of wear and tear.

Signs That You Need Roof Repair or Replacement

  1. Damaged Flashings – In New England many times flashing is damaged from a severe cold winter and snow that turns to ice on a roof. It’s one of the first items we check since they are located around chimneys, stacks, wall details, eaves, valleys, skylights and more. Flashing lifts and separates due to temperature differences and as a result they expand or contract and the flashing fasteners become loose allowing water to enter.
  2. Broken, Missing Shingles or Bare Spots – Broken, missing or shingles with bare spots weakens the roof system and can result in water leakage. Excessive wind and physical damage are key causes.
  3. Curled Shingles – Can be caused by an aging roof system and excessive heat. They are highly reactive to wind and ice damage. They become rigid and can break easily or lose tab edges.
  4. Bucking Shingles – They usually run vertically up a roof and have visible wave distortions—and again are highly reactive to wind and ice damage—or poorly installed underlayment, roof and wet.

This summer was particularly hot and I just noticed that some of my shingles are curled as you described. Probably due to the excessive heat as you mentioned. I came hoping that it wasn’t too big of a deal, but it’s good to know that they should be replaced soon.

Thanks for sharing your article about the warning signs that your roof needs to be replaced or repaired. I couldn’t agree more with what you said about how missing shingles can weaken the roof system which will eventually lead to a water leakage. The last time that it rained, my husband and I noticed that there’s a water leaking from our roof to the wall. This prompted my husband to check our roof and found out that there were missing and broken shingles. I will make sure to contact a roofing repair company as soon as possible to ensure the safety of my family inside our house.

It did catch my attention when you said that you should consider replacing your roof if there are broken and missing shingles on it because it’s a sign that your roofing system is getting weak that can result in water leakage. Our roof has an excessive amount of missing and cracked shingles on it. My goal is to keep my family comfortable in our house, so it’s important for me to ensure an efficient and strong roof. I will be sure to contact a roof replacement service for help.

You got my attention when you suggested having your roof repaired if it has missing shingles to make sure that water leakage is going to be prevented. This is something that I will be sure to share with my husband because he mentioned to me that our roof has a lot of bald spots when he checked it. I want to ensure an efficient repair, so we’ll make sure to consider hiring a roof damage repair contractor.
